Free Medical Services Fair This Saturday Hosted by Compassion Queen Creek

by: Robert Haasch

A free medical, dental, and social services fair will be held at Walker Butte Elementary School this upcoming Saturday, March 10th.

Compassion Queen Creek is inviting the public to attend. Local medical professionals are providing free medical care, dental care, well-woman care, and other checkups. The dental team is comprised of dental specialists, hygienists, and general dentistry professionals. They will be providing free teeth cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, and sealants for kids as well.

Doors open at 9am. Organizers are recommending that people arrive early because all services are basically first come, first serve. They will have a triage team set up to help direct where people need to go and to setup appointments.

This is the second year Compassion Queen Creek has held this event. The last event was in April 2011. The medical team was able to see over three hundred people and over one thousand people were fed by donated food from local businesses and restaurants.

Medical team lead, Kevin Brown, is expecting significantly more people. They have brought in a larger medical team to cover the need. Due to expanded advertising on local radio stations and word-of-mouth, they are hoping to provide medical services to 700 to 1,000 people.

Kevin said, "I was actually able to sit down with a couple of people throughout the day and talk to them about how their day was going." They replied that "This is completely amazing that people are doing this for the community." Kevin finished, "There aren't a whole lot of things like this that happen, so every time this happens people say this is the most amazing thing."

One event organizer, Margaret Bubik, stated, "We specifically, strategically picked Walker Butte Elementary figuring that would pull in people from Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Florence, Coolidge, Apache Junction, and people who are out in this area."

One of the goals is to treat people medically and then give them follow-ups as able. "If someone has diabetes, we want to connect them with a doctor who can do follow-up with them. Any other issues we want to do like that as well."

In addition to medical services, they will be hosting a social services fair. They will be offering clothing, food boxes, hygiene products, and a book drive.

Margaret Bubik stated that they wanted to "specifically make the clothing for people who want to go on job interviews. We wanted to be intentional with our clothing." They will also have volunteers helping people who are out of work, helping people tweak their resumes, and providing connections with places that are hiring.

I have been a resident of San Tan Valley since 2005. I am a web application developer for a company in Mesa. I spend some of my free time as a political freelance photojournalist and I also volunteer with an Arizona search and rescue organization.

I have enjoyed seeing the Queen Creek and San Tan Valley area grow and mature over the past seven years. In spite of some of the challenges facing the area, I enjoy living here and am optimistic that the economy and development of San Tan Valley will continue to improve. I enjoy the mixture of the rural atmosphere, the wilderness feel of the San Tan Mountain range, the open desert, and the proximity to many amenities provided by the city.

I look forward to seeing all of the positive things that Arizona will continue to provide and will continue to work hard to ensure that all people are made to feel welcome in this state. And no, I am not running for office but I think I will save that statement for later in case I ever do. :)
